10. Bad Moon
Eric Red · 1996

09. Dawn of the Dead
Zack Snyder · 2004
Survivors in a mall lower Chips the dog to the street in a duffel bag on a rope, then a woman crashes a truck into a gun store to get him back. Chips makes it through the movie. The credits footage on the island is less clear, so stop the tape early.

08. The Invisible Man
Leigh Whannell · 2020
Cecilia escapes her controlling tech-billionaire husband and takes his dog Zeus, after pulling off the shock collar. The rest of the movie is gaslighting by an unseen abuser. At the end she leaves free, and Zeus leaves with her. Made for $7 million, earned about $144 million.

07. Crawl
Alexandre Aja · 2019
A Category 5 hurricane, a flooded crawl space and a lot of alligators. Aja says the team debated whether Sugar the dog would live, with pitches for losing a tail or being used as bait. They let her ride out on the rescue helicopter. Correct call.

06. The Hills Have Eyes
Wes Craven · 1977
The Carters bring two German shepherds into the Mojave. Beauty dies early. Beast spends the rest of the film taking revenge, including shoving one of the cannibal clan off a cliff. Shot for well under a million on borrowed 16mm cameras, with the best performance on four legs.

05. Dog Soldiers
Neil Marshall · 2002
British soldiers on a Highlands exercise run into werewolves and a farmhouse siege. By the end the only survivors are Private Cooper and Sam, a border collie. The movie is called Dog Soldiers and it knows exactly which dog it means.

04. The Lost Boys
Joel Schumacher · 1987
Nanook the Alaskan Malamute does more vampire hunting than the Frog Brothers, shoving one undead teen into a bathtub of holy water. Corey Haim gets the credit. Nanook gets nothing, which is how it goes for working dogs in Santa Carla.
-

03. Gremlins
Joe Dante · 1984
Chris Columbus's script had the gremlins hang Barney the dog and eat him. Spielberg talked him down, so Barney just gets wrapped in Christmas lights. The movie still helped create the PG-13 rating. Barney's dignity did not survive, but Barney did.
-

02. Poltergeist
Tobe Hooper · 1982
The house eats the daughter, the pool fills with skeletons, and E. Buzz the golden retriever strolls out of the yard unharmed to join the escape. The family checks into a Holiday Inn and puts the TV outside. The dog stays in.

01. Good Boy
Ben Leonberg · 2025
A haunted-house movie told from the eye level of Indy, a Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever who is the director's own untrained dog. Shot over 400 days in short sessions so Indy never got stressed. The trailer made people google whether he dies. He does not.
